Google doesn't tell us what formula they use to determine what % they give us. However I believe it does depend on how relevant your site is to a certain subject, how relevant the ads are to the subject on the page, & I what the visitor has actually searched for.
This part is fact because I do use Adwords from time to time & is what leads some publishers to think they are being "ripped off" by Google. You can't compare what advertisers are paying for Adwords for Search to Adwords for Content. These are two separate bid functions in Adwords & you can use Adwords for Search without using Adwords for Content.
You better believe that someone paying $20-$30 per click either knows what they are doing or they are broke before they are a factor. The Adwords for Content (ones that show on Adsense publisher's sites) can be bought at a much lower cost than Adwords for Search if the Advertiser knows how to bid properly.
There are two reasons for this. One is that a lot of the high paying keyword advertisers don't use Adwords for Content at all because of all the garbage sites there are showing ads. The mortgage world definitely has quite a few of these. The other reason is that since there is a lot less competition in Adwords for Content the CPC can be drastically lower. Some advertisers are willing to put up w/ the garbage sites as long as they can get good quality clicks from the reputable sites if they get all content clicks at a very cheap price.
This part is my personal opinion & philosophy.
That is why I have "blasted" some people w/ no qualms at all in this forum when I have seen what they have done or what they want to do. Every time some publisher does something totally stupid or something to try to pull one over on Google it hurts us all because it drives other Advertisers out of the Content network.
Like any part of business, it's all about risk/reward. Once the risk becomes so great to where the reward is no longer worth it, Adword advertisers using Adwords for Content will simply put their money elsewhere. Read the many comments in this forum about people's earnings going down. I personally believe this is a big part of the problem.
Your site & my site has no relation to each other at all but what you (or any other publisher) do w/ your site may still affect how much I earn on mine. Therefore I won't accept "that I am new & just learning" from anybody.
Therefore you probably aren't doing anything wrong at all. It's just the way the Adsense world revolves & some of us are trying hard to clean it up one poster at a time. In the end, someday it just may make a difference.
